A guided day on the
Fall River
Guided trips on the Fall River typically
begin by meeting the guide at our exclusive access at the Riverside
House on Fall River. Depending on the time of year, we vary
the meet times to put you on the water during the most productive
times of the day.
Over the years, our guides have worked out
an effective system to get you on the water during the most
productive times of the day based on the time of year and the different
hatches. Our guides guarantee at least eight or nine hours on the
water. During the spring, early summer, and fall months, the guides
typically meet on the river at 8:00 am. Since there is no need to
shuttle cars or boat trailers on the Fall River, you’re on
the water and fishing right away. Most of the best hatches on Fall
River take place in the middle of the day. This all changes, however,
during the endless days of summer, when the giant Hexagenia mayflies
come out right as the light grows dim each day.
Targeting the Hex Hatch means fishing late,
often casting the giant dry flies until you can’t see anymore.
The Hexagenia come off during the longest days of the year,
and there are times when Fall River guides don’t get off the
water until nearly 11:00 pm. Fishing from sunup to sundown in June
and July equates to a 14 hour day or longer, and just isn’t
an option. Guides will generally either meet you in the morning
to fish through the morning hatches, then take a midday siesta and
get back on the water in the evening to fish the caddis and Hex
hatches late. Every year is different, however, and sometimes the
afternoons fish better than the mornings, in which case the guides
may prefer to meet at midday and fish straight through till dark.
We’ll coordinate the meeting times prior to the start of your
trip based on your preferences and the guides’ intimate experience
of the Fall River hatches.
If you are scheduled to meet your guide
anywhere other than at The Fly Shop, please check our general
on-line
trip equipment and fly checklist or give us a call at 800-669-3474
to get the latest reports and fly suggestions.
It’s best to check in with The Fly
Shop to make sure that you have the right flies prior to your Fall
River fishing trip. The guides are on the water nearly every
day of the season, which makes it difficult for them to keep their
own fly boxes well stocked as they rarely have a chance to get into
the shop to reload. If you won’t have an opportunity to stop
by The Fly Shop during business hours on your way to Fall River,
we can put a care package of flies together for you and make sure
that you get it for your trip, or we can sign you up for our “Guide
Trip Package Deal”. Just give us a call, and we’ll do
everything we can to guarantee your trip is a success.
All of the guided trips with The Fly Shop
are fly fishing and catch-and-release only.
- Fall River is one of the
most unique spring creek fisheries in the world. Its lack
of shore or public access, gin-clear currents, remarkable hatches
and spectacular – often trophy-sized – rainbow trout
make it one of those fly fishing rivers that every one should
fish at least once in their lifetime. And most people, once they’ve
given Fall River a shot, will come back year after year. It’s
the finest dry fly fishing in the Shasta Cascade Wonderland, yet
it is technical fishing that will challenge even the most experienced
anglers while still providing great learning and catching opportunities
for novices as well.
- Lunch is provided on all
our full day trips. If you have any special dietary needs,
you'll need to let us know in advance and, of course you are free
to bring your own food, snacks, or beverages.
- Our guide team is on the
Fall River throughout the season. They are the unqualified
experts. They know best what's working and what's not, and the
list of flies that you'll need is usually very precise and accurate.
While trout can be finicky creatures and their diets frequently
change from day to day, our guides work as a team and their intimate
knowledge of the river and the current feeding habits make it
an easy job to choose the effective fly patterns that will help
make every day on the water productive.
- It's usually best to purchase
or tie flies before your trip. Fall River has some of the
most predictable hatches anywhere, and it is one of the rare fisheries
where the same flies that worked last year are likely to work
again every year. Our on-line fly lists for Fall River were personally
selected by our top river guides, and if have specific questions
or would like more recommendations please give us a call at The
Fly Shop at 800-669-3474 to talk to one of our experienced retail
experts.
- Consider our "Package
Deals" if you are just getting started in the sport,
or won’t have time to swing by The Fly Shop on your way
to the river. We'll match you up with the correct rod, reel, line,
and all the flies, tippet, leaders, and terminal tackle you'll
need for an extra $50 a day. The only things not included in that
package are licenses.
- Fall River guided trips
are designed for one or two anglers sharing the guide and boat
for the day. Fishing the Fall River requires small, shallow-draft
prams, that can only accomodate a maximum of two anglers plus the guide.
- Waders are not needed for
guided trips on Fall River. Fishing on the Fall is done
entirely from boats, and there is no shore access.
- Car Shuttles are not necessary
on Fall River. You will begin and end each day at our exclusive
Riverside launch site.
- Every angler needs to have
a current California fishing license.
To make a reservation,
please give us a call at 800-669-3474 during business hours
any day of the week. We can give you the answers you need or the
detailed explanations to questions you might have, or check on guide
