| Klamathon Lodge on the Klamath
River
Klamathon Lodge
is a beautiful log-cabin style home recently constrcuted right on
the banks of the Klamath River, north of Yreka, California,
approximately 1 1/2 hours north of Redding on Interstate 5. Its
prime location makes it perfect for accessing the upper floats on
the river below Iron Gate Dam, targeting steelhead from November
through February and rainbow trout on big dry flies in June.
The lodge is full
of amenities and activities for both anglers and non-angling spouses.
There are two bedrooms upstairs, each with three beds and a private
bath and boasting views of the river and nearby wildlife, including
an osprey nest at eye-level a mere stone's throw away. There is
also a comfortable sitting/reading area, with a desk for computer
use and WiFi access. The great room of the lodge is centered around
huge picture windows looking out on the deck and river below, with
a river-rock fireplace to warm the entire lodge in the winter months.
Plush couches, a game table, even flatscreen satellite TV, complete
the package. Downstairs there is a rec-room with pool table, entertainment
system, exercise equipment, and just outside a Jacuzzi hot tub and
fire-pit.
The lodge can sleep up to 8 guests,
but is really ideal for groups of 4-6 anglers. All meals are included
with fly fishing packages at Klamathon Lodge.
Winter Steelhead
The section of the Klamath River has two distinct
fisheries: the winter steelhead season and the spring/summer stonefly
hatches.
The winter steelhead season
is in full swing by the end of November, and typically fishes through
February and sometimes in early March. The adult steelhead
average 3-8 pounds, with bigger fish possible, and are hooked consistently
most days. In addition to the big adults, the river is often full
of “half-pounder” steelhead running from 16-20 inches
and smaller rainbow trout from 8-12 inches.
Spring Stoneflies
With the fresh breath of spring,
the river transforms from a winter wonderland to a stonefly mecca,
with both salmonflies and golden stoneflies hatching by the thousands
from Memorial Day, all through the month of June and right into
the first couple weeks of July. Midday temperatures can be
warm, but the high-elevation makes for cool mornings and comfortable
evenings. We will often fish early in the morning, casting nymphs
(and dry flies) for several hours before pulling up to the lodge’s
boat ramp and enjoying a tasty lunch on the deck.
Midday is a great time to relax, enjoy some trap shooting
at the nearby R-Ranch, play a game of whiffleball or horseshoes,
take a nice long nap, or even drive up for some wade-fishing on
the nearby upper Klamath River from the Oregon State line down to
Copco Lake.
From mid-afternoon till dusk, however, the giant salmonflies
and golden stoneflies are in the air, and casting big dry flies
against the shoreline brush will bring wild rainbows of every shape
and size to the surface.

Fishing Days: The fishing days at
Klamathon are designed to put you on the water during the most productive
times of day. This may vary depending on the conditions and the
time of year.
For the winter steelhead season, guides will typically
join guests for breakfast at the lodge, then head out to fish around
8:00 am. There are several different options for floats between
Iron Gate Dam and Interstate-5. Depending upon that day’s
float, the guides will either serve a shore lunch, or pull up to
the main lodge for lunch. Days can be cold and short in the winter
months, but the guides will work hard, fishing until last light
(safety is important, so the guides will usually aim to hit the
boat ramp just before dark). A warm, delicious meal will be served
at the lodge upon your return in the evening.
During the longer days of spring/summer, the guides
will often fish early and late in the day, 4-5 hours in the morning
and 4-5 hours in the evening, taking a break during the midday heat.
There are some great non-angling opportunities at Klamathon for
this midday siesta, including trap-shooting at the nearby R-Ranch,
games and activities on the lawn, or just plain relaxing. For die-hard
anglers, there’s even some good wade-fishing opportunities
a short drive away on the upper Klamath River from the Oregon state
line down to Copco reservoir.

11:00 am If you would like to arrange for a later departure, or
