Marble Mountain Ranch Fly Fishing on the Klamath River

The Marble Mountain Ranch, with it’s prime location right in the heart of the fabled Northern California steelhead country, is the perfect destination to target adult and half-pounder steelhead with traditional swinging techniques on the Klamath River and the Lower Trinity River in the fall and winter months. The setting is one of the last western frontiers in the lower 48, with rugged terrain and very little angling traffic in the remote Marble Mountain Wilderness and Six Rivers National Forest.

Located near Somes Bar and the mouth of the Salmon River where it enters the Klamath, Marble Mountain Ranch guides are ideally situated to fish the seldom-fished sections of the middle Klamath. These scenic sections of river run through wild canyons and dense forests, and are far enough away from any populace that anglers here hardly ever see another angler, even during the peak of the prime season from October through November.

The fall season on the middle Klamath is ideal for steelhead purists who prefer to swing flies using traditional techniques, including dry flies on floating lines, greased-line tactics, and sink-tips. There are healthy populations of half-pounder steelhead migrating upriver throughout October and November, with adult steelhead ranging from 3-8 pounds mixed in. Anglers fishing with the Marble Mountain Ranch routinely hook into a handful of half-pounders each day, along with several larger adult steelhead.

Accommodations: Guests staying at the Marble Mountain Ranch sleep soundly in cozy cabins nestled along the ranch’s tree-lined Cabin Row. The cabins are unique and are reminiscent of the historic mining, logging, and, most important, fishing eras of the Klamath River region. Each cabin comes complete with linens, towels, hot and cold running water, and full bathrooms. In addition, the cabins are furnished with an apartment refrigerator and microwave, and some of the cabins have full kitchens.

Guests also have the option to upgrade to one of the deluxe homes, which have full kitchen/dining rooms, a more spacious setting, and are somewhat more isolated from the rest of the ranch. These can be a nice option for groups when available.

Daily fishing: Fishing days are typically from early light to dusk, depending on the time of year. The day starts with a hot ranch breakfast in the main dining lodge, and follows with a quick departure for the river. Anglers are asked to come to breakfast with their gear organized and ready to load in the boats. Most guests wader-up and board the ranch trucks immediately after breakfast, excited with the prospects of shaking heads and acrobatic fish on the end of the line!

Most of the runs that are drifted by the Marble Mountain Ranch guides are on the Klamath River within a half hour shuttle from the lodge. Occasionally the guides will run a little bit further downstream to drift the Trinity River in the Hoopa Valley, just above its confluence with the Klamath. Whenever possible, the shuttle service is provided so that guests can leave their vehicles at their cabin.

Shore lunches are provided on the drift boats every day, and dinner is typically on the table about an hour after dusk so that anglers get a very full day of fishing in.
