| Equipment and Flies
- Rods: 4 & 5-weight
fly rods, 9 feet long are ideal for fishing Fall River. Many anglers
like 6 wt rods for water this big, and some may even prefer 3
wts. It is all a matter of personal preference and none of the
choices are wrong.
- Reels: Most reels
are just fine for Fall River. You will not have many fish here
take you into your backing because most are just are not that
big. However, these big fish can give quite a strong first surge
and if your reel hangs up just a bit the fish will win. Just make
sure any reel you use releases line smoothly no matter how full
or empty the spool is.
- Fly Lines: Almost
everyone uses a weight forward taper, floating line for fishing Fall
River.
Some anglers like to swing flies deep and that means a sink tip
or sinking line of some sort. A number of anglers will have two
set ups in their boat- one with a floating line and long leader
and one with a sinking line and shorter leader.
- Leaders:
12 foot leaders tapered to 4X or 5x will be a great start when
fishing dry flies or nymphs under an indicator. Adding a section
of 5x or 6x tippet and you are ready to go with the dries. Shorter
leaders (9’) work better if you are swinging flies deep. We
always advocate the use of fluorocarbon tippets as they are harder
for the fish to see and
are much more abrasive resistant than monofilament leaders.

Flies for Riverside
This is by no means an all
exclusive list of flies. There are many other patterns that
will work as well in many cases. However, this is a list of flies
that represent patterns that any fisherman should have in their
vest. Going to our private ranches or to public water with three
or four patterns will mean you stand a great chance of not having
the right fly at the right time.
