Equipment Checklist
for your Guided Fly Fishing trip for Shad
- 7 or 8 weight single handed fly rods (9-10
feet long), or 6-9 weight two-handed spey rods (12-15 feet long)
are ideal.
- Reels should have a good
drag system and be equipped with a sink-tip line or shooting head
set-up. Sink rates should be medium-fast. A 200 to 300
grain head is ideal for most situations. Floating lines are not
used for shad fishing..
- Every angler needs to have a current California
fishing license, Delta Bay Enhancement Stamp, and Steelhead Report
Card while fly fishing for shad on the Sacramento River.
- Chest-high waders and felt
or studded wading boots are optional on shad trips. It
is possible to fish entirely from the boats, keeping or feet dry,
and water temperatures in the lower sections of the Lower Sac
can actually be comfortable to wet-wade in the midsummer heat.
The Fly Shop does not rent waders or boots.
- Rods and reels are usually
not provided on guided trips, but can be supplied upon request.
You are encouraged to bring equipment
that you are comfortable with. If you need any equipment, please
call The Fly Shop to make special arrangements..

Flies for Shad:
Shad flies are usually #4 to #6 and colored
VERY brightly with oranges, reds, and fluorescent greens or chartreuse.
Heavy "bead-chain" eyes are good. The Fly Shop
stocks some of the local favorites, and your guide will have a few,
but try to bring a small selection.
